Robin Cancer Trust: two years of outsourced trust fundraising

Outsourced trust fundraising for a small national cancer charity. Results recorded in August 2024.

The brief

Robin Cancer Trust is a small cancer charity that has grown to provide support and resources nationally. Most of its income came from events and community fundraising. It wanted to grow its trust fundraising beyond local and regional funders.

The first priority was the cost of its Community Engagement Manager, a post two trusts had funded until the end of 2022. The charity also wanted to find other parts of its work that trusts would fund.

Its small team had neither the capacity nor the in-house expertise to build a trust programme while delivering its support and awareness work on germ cell cancers, and its other fundraising.

What we did

For two years, Money Tree Fundraising ran Robin Cancer Trust's trust fundraising. We researched a pipeline of prospects, wrote a full case for support, and prepared template letters and proposals for both core and project costs.

Our associate then delivered a programme of applications, from small trusts to larger and multi-year bids. She also led on acknowledging grants and reporting to funders, and supported the charity's monitoring and evaluation.

Results

20 of 86 applications succeeded, a success rate of almost one in four.

19 of them brought in grants worth almost £86,000. With a multi-year National Lottery Reaching Communities award, the total is just under £299,000.

The successes included a place in the Big Give.

Trust fundraising is now established at the charity, with stewardship and reporting in place, ready to move into its permanent team.

"The fact that she looks after absolutely everything takes so much pressure and capacity off our team, which is invaluable for a small team!"
