Dream Big Ghana: the foundations for a trust fundraising programme

Hands-on coaching and policies for a new charity. Approved February 2020.

The brief

Dream Big Ghana Foundation is a relatively new charity supporting development work in Ghana. It has no paid staff and is run by a volunteer board of trustees in England and Ghana. The trustees' expertise is in the work, not in fundraising, and its few fundraising efforts had mostly been its website and local events.

Through networking it had won a multi-year grant to put it on a firmer footing administratively so it could grow its fundraising and its organisation.

What we did

We helped the trustees put in place the policies and processes a charity needs to succeed at trust fundraising. We walked them through the governance, financial and project information that a strong foundation requires, and tailored our hands-on coaching so they could link the basics to their own situation and capacity.

Results

The policies and processes needed to start trust fundraising.

A first application submitted to a major international development funder, which showed the trustees at first hand how much time, information and content the process takes.

A much better understanding of charitable fundraising, and of the level of involvement it needs from the trustees.

"Working with Money Tree has improved our knowledge and provided us with a sounding board as we have developed our policies, strategies, and expectations for fundraising."
