Build Africa: a review of its trust fundraising and a plan to rebuild it

A trust fundraising review and recommendations. Approved October 2018.

The brief

A new head of fundraising joined Build Africa after a period of change, and the whole fundraising and communications function needed reviewing. The charity had a strong history of trust income, so the potential was proven, but income had been in decline for several years. Understanding why was essential.

With only one trusts fundraiser, and a wide remit for the new head, there was no time to find the answers in-house.

What we did

A period of research followed. Our consultant evaluated the charity's approach to trusts, critiqued its applications and found trusts that were not on its radar. She then produced a report and a list of recommendations for increasing its effectiveness.

Results

Further buy-in for investment in trust fundraising, including keeping our consultant on for bid writing, research and upskilling the team.

A new list of trusts to apply to, which the small team had had no time to find.

A full action plan to optimise the programme, with several actions implemented straight away.

"Having worked with (and for) many fundraising agencies over my 13 years in the sector, I can confidently say that Money Tree Fundraising are among the best."
